An Intermediate to Advanced Workshop

Students at this level will know how to do gradated washes, understand how to use the color wheel to build warm and cool paintings, have developed compositional skills and design sense. All these principles will be reviewed so we can take the next step.

In this workshop, we will explore textural possibilities using watercolor, gouache, acrylic inks, metallic powers, oil pastels and other mediums in conjunction with watercolor. Other areas to be mastered: rich octanic* darks, as well as pouring and negative painting techniques. Students will be working from their own photographs and their personal color palette. We will also explore how to use multiple photographs in a painting.

*Octanic refers to placing rich darks next to lights as a pleasant counterpoint to the light pattern in the painting. Some artists do this as the initial wash. And then there’s knowing what pigments give you rich vibrant darks so your painting doesn’t have lifeless, dull darks. All of which can be reproduced from our current supply list of pigments.
