There are several watercolor papers available, both in weight and surfaces, but it can be a bit daunting to experiment with them all. That’s why we are so excited to introduce this weekend workshop! You will be given 26 sheets of different watercolor papers, all labeled by name and weight.

Laura will show us how to use a spiral binder to make our own, personalized watercolor sketchbook. Meanwhile, Susan will demonstrate different techniques such as wet on wet, gradated washes, pouring and dry brush. Some other materials will also be provided: gesso, gouache, salt and some inks.

You are encouraged to bring in your own materials as well: saran wrap, colored pencils and water-soluble crayons.  We can share with each other as we learn new ideas and techniques.

“I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. After graduating from college, I taught drawing and painting at the secondary level, and later found other creative outlets: illustrating a children’s book, and working on set direction for the Smithsonian Institution and also at a maritime museum in New York. After a twenty year career in advertising and graphic ad design, I retired, and now I am painting full time in the medium of watercolor.

Artists of the past and the present speak to me with their music, stories and poems. However, it is with painters that I feel a special kinship.

Painting is my way of expressing delight in my everyday surroundings. I walk the beaches and observe the moods of the ocean and the people at play and contemplation. I delight in the patterns created by sunlight playing on palm fronds, the subtle color gradations of foliage, and the majesty of the old oak trees and sycamores indigenous to this part of the world.”
