Geri Medway - Beginners Workshop – March 2019


Arches Cold Press Watercolor Pad – 9 x 12. For practicing your techniques, etc.

1 sheet of 22 x 30 140lb Cold Press Arches. We will cut one sheet into half, and one half, into half. Total 3 pieces. These will be used for paintings, after you have practiced your techniques, etc.

NO Strathmore or student grade. Absolutely NOT!

Automatic pencil with HB lead (the plastic kind that are inexpensive, available anywhere, Staples, etc.) or #2 office pencil

Kneaded eraser.

Brushes: Watercolor Rounds. Synthetic is fine. Good point, full body to hold a generous amount of water, good spring. Silver Black Velvet is great, Robert Simmons is good.

#8, #12 and/or #14. 1 inch Flat. (Optional)

Plastic Palette – empty, wait to fill wells until in class

Masking Tape (Drafting tape, that Blue painters tape, or Artists tape)

Spray Bottle

Paper Towels

Water container

Winsor Newton, Holbein, Graham, Daniel Smith, Maimeri Blu are all good. Small tubes are adequate. No student grade or pans.

Winsor Yellow (or Primary Yellow) Quin Gold

Winsor Red – Quinacridone Rose or Permanent Rose


Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue. Cerulean Blue, Winsor Blue-Red Shade (or Thalo Blue)

Sap Green or Hookers Green

Burnt Sienna - Raw Sienna


Any board to work on, slightly larger than the size paper you will be working on.

This can be Gator board, or one of those “hard board” boards.


Notebook for notes.



Brush up on the basics of painting with watercolor! Geri will demonstrate and walk you through various techniques in a friendly and educational atmosphere! She’ll help you build a good foundation that will take away fears of painting with this wonderful, “glowing,” medium!

With a few basic rules you’ll cover:

*Setting up your palette and other basics to start a painting.

*Easy formulas of how much water is in your brush versus how wet your paper is.

*Qualities of different pigments – transparent, opaque, staining, granulation.

*Covering basic color theory and creating a variety of color values.

After that there are many techniques to learn and fun to be had including wet on dry, wet on wet, splattering, lifting, masking, & layering.

Be sure to register ahead of time for this wonderful class!

Geri is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society and Watercolor West. Her mastery of the medium has been recognized with awards by numerous art festivals and art associations. A natural teacher, she has authored painting instruction books and taught art workshops in locales such as Limoux, France and Yosemite National Park. Her work is held in numerous collections in the US and abroad. She continues to teach workshops in SouthernCalifornia. Geri has exhibited for 16 years at the Festival of Arts, as well as at the Art-A-Fair, Laguna Beach.
